Some people say that practice theories are especially relevant for the study of small scale phenomena, but that they can’t engage with long-term or large-scale trends in society such as those associated with social inequality, climate change or world trade.  In this talk/workshop I take the opposite view, arguing that practice theory’s ‘flat’ ontology (refusing to suppose that there are higher levels of explanation) provides and in fact requires a distinctive method of approaching topics of this kind.
